What kind of history goes with this hotel? Construction on the hotel began in 1997, and it opened in the year 2000. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) was reportedly responsible for funding the project after a design by Brennan Beer Gorman was chosen in an architectural competition which included entries from architects such as Michael Graves & Associates. After construction the building was awarded the 2000 Emporis Skyscraper Award.

When you arrived, how was the lobby and customer service? The lobby is fantastic and always smells so lovely, but when I arrived, they had the very large Tony award statue on view. The hotel is one of the official Tony awards hotels and hosts events prior to the show. They also had on display wonderful vintage Louis Vuitton luggage which made me smile! 

How fantastic or not so fantastic was the room? Their customer service is always fantastic here, and since I was only staying one night, I booked a smaller size room. They upgraded me to a room on a higher floor which was a nice surprise. The staff really go out of their way to give you the best service which is why I keep coming back. All rooms are generous size for New York City. 

The cleanliness of the hotel and room itself ? The hotel and room are always very clean, I have never had one single issue in all my stays.

Were you able to have sweet dreams with the comfy bed? The beds are so wonderful and comfy, they actually sell their bed sheets on their website. Your bed at home can be just as fantastic as your experience in the hotel!

The All-Important bathroom subject? Their bathroom is one of the best in all the hotels I have stayed within NYC. They are all very large, no matter your room size, separate shower with tub and marble floors. I cannot help but like a nice size bathroom when staying at a hotel. 

What kind of shower treats awaited you? Coffee maker in the room? Lanvin bath products are quite elegant to enjoy. No coffee maker but my favorite coffee shop, Gregory's is across the street. 

Did room service blow your mind or was just okay? I have dined here with room service before and it was always very good. The above items were welcome treats that awaited me when I returned from my Broadway show. A very nice touch that is not found in all hotels. 

Everyone wants to know, is Wi-Fi included? Yes, it is included

Is Fido allowed come with you? Yes, they can stay for FREE


Location is key, how does this hotel measure? Love this location as you are away from the tourists but close enough to plays, and attractions to walk everywhere. 3 minutes from Bryant Park and the NY Public Library. 5 minutes from Times Square, Broadway shows, Grand Central, Radio City, Rockefeller Center. And my favorite coffee shop, Gregory's, is across the street.

What was the best part of staying here? The customer service is always outstanding and the size of the rooms is fantastic for New York City. The location is also amazing as you really can walk everywhere and not need to use transportation. For this stay I was attending the press event at the Met , and enjoyed a Broadway show (which was just awesome). I was able to get in the room early, for no extra charge, and freshen up before the play. The staff makes an extra effort to really give top notch customer service. The staff notices if you have stayed at the hotel before and makes a big effort to be sure you are happy with your stay.

Would you change anything? The rooms could probably use a bit of updating, and maybe a coffee maker in the room would be nice.


Is this hotel worth it and why? I feel it is because I have enjoyed every stay here, from my first being upgraded to a suite to this last stay. Customer service is a big part of a hotel, and it makes you want to keep coming back. The location is ideal, rooms are nice size for New York City and for me as a solo traveler I feel very comfortable. I would recommend this hotel to anyone.

Conclusion: This hotel will continue to be one of my "go-to" hotels in the city. It has consistently been a pleasure to stay here, and I am hoping that if they update the rooms a bit, it will be even better. The location, fantastic bathrooms, customer service, and overall appeal of the place makes it a perfect hotel for me in every way. I look forward to my next stay!

Always remember to check the hotel's website itself, they are really trying to have you book direct and sometimes offer specials or a discount with AAA that is cheaper than the websites I mentioned above. I am also finding that if you book on your mobile device, you can save some money as well. I actually got a better rate via my mobile phone than using my AAA discount online direct at the hotel. You should really do some research on your price for hotel a few different ways, and ALWAYS book a room that you can cancel, you never know what may happen in the future. You also want the ability to change hotels if you should find a better option closer to your date of arrival.


Resort fees are something I am seeing at more New York hotels, about 82 of the over 400 hotels in New York City now charge. These fees can run you between $30 to $60 per night for your stay. They list services such as newspapers, in room coffee or WiFi for these fees, and if you book with a hotel that has this fee, you are obligated to pay it. When checking your prices, be sure to look for the small print if there is an additional resort fee and make your decision whether you want that additional charge. What kind of history goes with this hotel? Construction began in 1997 and the hotel opened in 2000 as part of the Accor Hotels group. After construction the building was awarded the 2000 Emporis Skyscraper Award, for architectural excellence regarding the design of buildings and their functionality.

When you arrived, how was the lobby and customer service? The lobby of this hotel is wonderful. There are many seats available, the only item missing are plugs to charge your devices. The customer service at this hotel is one of the reasons I keep coming back. I was here for Christmas and booked a regular Queen size room. They asked me if I would like an upgrade to a room with a view of the Chrysler building. I of course was thrilled, and advised I would wait. They phoned me when the room was available by 11:18 am and the room did not disappoint.  

How fantastic or not so fantastic was the room? Their rooms are always a very good size at 350 square feet, I feel especially for New York City. The furniture could use some updating but it isn't anything horrible. My phone was a bit spotty in the room but may have been because I was on the 23rd floor. I booked through hotels.com and was still treated very well. The safe is a great size, I put any valuables in there or items I may purchase that are on the pricey side, to be safe.

The cleanliness of the hotel and room itself ? The room was very clean and the hotel itself is very spotless.

Were you able to have sweet dreams with the comfy bed? All 398 rooms are outfitted with the cocoon-like SoBed, an indulgent down-topped mattress which is available to purchase to use at home if you wish. It is quite the extra comfy!

The All-Important bathroom subject? I LOVE the bathrooms in this hotel! I have had many different types of rooms, and it seems all the bathrooms are the same. Large, marble design, separate tub and  rain shower and plenty of room to get dressed. The fresh flower is another fine touch.

What kind of shower treats awaited you? Coffee maker in the room? No coffee maker in the room but wonderful Lanvin toiletries are for your use.

Did room service blow your mind or was just okay? So this was my breakfast Christmas morning with the Chrysler building. It is one of my favorite buildings in the city and such a treat to spend the holiday with! Room service was very good but the food could have been a bit hotter. Again, probably being on the 23rd floor didn't help matters.

Everyone wants to know, is Wi-Fi included? Yes, it is FREE ! 

Is Fido allowed come with you? Sofitel New York welcomes two pets of any size for a $300 refundable deposit. Both dogs and cats are permitted. Pets may not be left unattended in rooms. Treats, bowls, and beds are available. 

Location is key, how does this hotel measure? I love this location. You are 2 blocks from Bryant Park and near the theater district. You have access to 16 subway lines, or walk mostly anywhere in Midtown Manhattan in minutes, including Rockefeller Center. Also in the vicinity, Central Park is 15 blocks north and the Empire State Building is 10 blocks south. You are also within walking distance to the Flatiron and NoMad areas, 2 of my most favorite, with lots of fun shops and great restaurants.

What was the best part of staying here? I honestly have to say the customer service is number one. Number two would be the location and three would be the room size/bathroom size. The hotel is French/English speaking and the staff really go out of their way to accommodate their guests. I have never had a bad stay here and my first ever stay, I was upgraded to a Suite.

Would you change anything? I would probably add plugs in the lobby for charging devices and upgrade the room furniture which I think they have in the works.

Is this hotel worth it and why? The service is top notch, location perfect and room size fantastic for New York City. I will be staying again and again for the near future.

Conclusion: One of my favorite hotels in the city and one I will be staying at for many years to come. Never a bad choice, only issue may be to get the best rate available. It is worth $300 a night however if you have to pay that amount, I honestly don't think you can go wrong with this hotel. Sofitel New York Hotel Review Christmas 2016

Sorry for the delay in this post. It's been a busy few months for me! I had the pleasure of spending Christmas this year in New York City! The first time, and it was just wonderful. The weather was very mild, and I choose to return to the Sofitel New York Hotel for the holidays. I stayed one night in 2015 and was eager to get back. The location on West 44th street is perfect, close to Bryant Park and many other shops and restaurants. How gorgeous is their tree above? 

The lobby was really lovely for the holiday. I arrived Christmas Eve for 2 nights. 

I love a nice lobby because you can chill out while planning your next area to check out in the city. 

My room was ready when I arrived around 10:30am which was awesome. They upgraded my room to a Superior Room and they would have given me one with a view, but I didn't want to wait. The room was lovely, lots of room which I am a big fan to find in NYC! 

From being here before, I requested a coffee maker as one is not in the room automatically. They did bring me a Keurig machine while I was out.  

This has to be one of the best bathrooms I have seen in a hotel in the city. A Rain shower along with a wonderful tub, all marble and very big. I hate having a small bathroom, even if I am staying on my own. 

Christmas Eve brunch was pretty amazing from room service. I was in my glory and I saved some of the baked goods for the next day for breakfast. Good room service just makes your stay so much better. 

I also had room service another night for dinner. This burger was amazing and the fries are pomme frites which are made the French way, very thin and crispy. I was a happy person to say the least. 

They sent up some French macarons to welcome me back to the hotel. The advantages of staying in a French hotel.

Would I reserve a night at the Sofitel New York again? This being my second time at this hotel, it didn't disappoint. I can't even think of many negatives about this place. The location is wonderful, you can walk just about everywhere and avoid taxi/subway rides. Many places to enjoy a meal in the area as well - both inexpensive and expensive. I will be back here I am sure. I would say this hotel is worth the full price of a room, but if you can find a deal, all the better.

My rating for this hotel, on a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being perfect in every way, is a 9.

Sofitel New York Hotel Review

This is the first of a series of hotel reviews for New York City for 2016. Trip Adviser lists 469 reviews for hotels in this city that never sleeps! That is a heck of a lot of choices! I feel if you are going to budget for your visit, the hotel stay is not the place to cut funds. I personally look for a hotel that is clean, safe, near public transportation and a great place to relax at the end of a hectic day in the city. If you pick a cheaper hotel that is not near public transportation, or any places you wish to visit, it really isn't going to benefit you in the long run. I am going to suggest you stay in different hotels with each visit, as you get to find out about different areas of the city, and experience their different vibes! Upper East Side, Upper West Side, Midtown, Flatiron, Times Square (my least favorite), Chelsea, Greenwich Village, Soho, Tribeca all have a uniqueness to them. You can really experience the "real" New York City when you get a taste of the character of each neighborhood. Now for a little history about the Sofitel New York, which is part of the Accor Hotels group. This 30-story luxury building is made out of limestone and glass, just beautiful. The hotel is inspired by a French theme and was completed in 2000. This was one of the top hotels on Trip Advisor, so I was really excited about staying here. The location is pretty top notch, you are very near Bryant Park, the NY Public Library, many subway lines, Grand Central and Penn Station. The bottled water and chocolates above were a nice touch when I arrived in the suite. I was shocked this hotel was listed in the Times Square/Broadway area, but it is close, but you are not near the craziness of Times Square. This is a great hotel if you are doing a Broadway show, as you are within walking distance of most theaters.

• television didn't have many channels, and not all were digital

Would I reserve a night at the Sofitel New York again? In a heartbeat, yes! I really loved my stay here, and when I am in the area, need to pop in to see what they scent the lobby with! Each time I came back to the hotel, the smell was so inviting! The location is perfect, and I even found a new diner to enjoy, the Red Flame, for future visits! I also enjoyed breakfast at db Bistro Moderne which was a place I have always wanted to visit. 

My rating for this hotel, on a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being perfect in every way, is a 9.
