This is a different bakery from any you have ever seen. The items here are works of art. Japanese Bakeries are probably not found in many of our hometowns. The staff is very pleasant and I think happy I was taking photos of their items. I felt the need to buy something and did get a dessert and some tea. I can't even describe what I ate but it was amazing and like nothing I ever had before. This is a great place to stop to bring something home to family and friends that would be very, very different. Let's take a peek inside.....
window looked great for Father's Day
their windows are always pretty amazing
these desserts look quite interesting..like an eyeball?
this one looks like an eclair ......
these cherries were my favorite
next time I am in the city I have to try one....
these must be very unique for the price...
this was the chocolate section...I really wanted to try one of those little chocolate filled items
these looked like a biscuit or cookie

Love the look of Japanese sweet treats.
I really love those little pancake/red bean sandwiches the best...I'm a conservative I guess...
It is veeery dangerous blog. I cann't stop watching it, my mind is in cackes, I completety forgot that I am overweight and photos quality is so good!
Wow! That looks so different! I love to try new things so I bet if I was there I would have eaten a lot!
Unbelievable that this is food! Works of art - is right! They're so good at presentation. And they're usually subtle flavours, not too sweet - I like that.
I am so enjoying your blog - your postings are both informative and mouth watering!!!
We are hoping to make it to NYC this summer - and will be adding this shop to our sweet tooth fix. cheers, HHL
Mmmmmm...everything in Kitochen looks so exotic and delightful! I would have a hard time chosing something except I know I'd pass on the $63 item ...lol!
My daughter works in this area...I will send this post to her. Thanks Rosemary!
Look delicious!

It's great that you're featuring Minamoto because I think Japanese desserts are just not given enough attention :) Typically they are pancake, mochi (pounded sticky rice cake) treats filled with sweet red, green or white bean paste or chestnuts. Seasonal sweets tend to be fruits, like the cherries or melon. The most common ones, daifuku, which you photographed (the eyeballs--which actually only look like that because they are display items), are mochi filled with red bean paste and chestnut, they are soft and chewy and really delicious (and dangerously addictive). Another really popular one is the taiyaki which is pancake with red bean paste (this is a childhood favorite for many and a great introduction to Japanese desserts). All these desserts go perfectly with a nice bitter tea such barley, green or black. Another wonderful place where you can try delicious Japanese desserts is Cha-An near St. Mark's Place. It's a Japanese tea-house essentially. Check it out! I hope this little description helps!
