They originated in Sicily and are an essential part of Sicilian cuisine. They are also very popular in Italian American cuisine and many restaurants serve them on the dessert menu. Cannoli consist of tube shaped shells of fried pastry dough, filled with a sweet, creamy filling usually containing ricotta cheese, fruit pieces and maybe chocolate chips. There are some who use a pastry creme but they to me are not a real cannoli. The filling is very simple to make and the shells can maybe be purchased at your local bakery or gourmet food shop - then all you have to do is fill and enjoy! They are always best eaten asap so they shell remains crisp.
Let's take a look at some wonderful cannoli ...............................
one of my fave shots from Michelle Fabio at http://www.bleedingespresso.com/ in a caffe' in Palmero, Italy
from dgin12 at flickr this shot was taken at Danoli Bakery in North Beach in San Francisco. This bakery had been at this location for over 100 years.
these are stuffed cannolis taken by kathyylchan from flickr Stuffed Artisan Cannolis in NYC's lower east side on Stanton St., between Clinton and Attorney Sts. They make all different kind of fillings and also mini's just for a bit to satisfy your cravings!!!
more from Sicily at flickr member Ambrosiana Pictures.....they like to have cherries on the ends which look so pretty
this is one of my shots taken at Grand Central Station..Zaro's Bakery ....these have some ends dipped in chocolate .....
from my camera at Ferrara's Bakery in Little Italy on Grand Street...also they have to the left some that the shells are completely dipped in chocolate. Cannot go wrong here at all.
I hope I have inspired some who have not tried a cannoli to do so. You can start with a mini to see how you like it and then go up to the regular size!! Italy has such great food, I am very proud to be of 100% neopolitan decent, and this is just one item I cannot live without!!!
Cannoli's for everyone !!!!

Hey thanks for highlighting my photo! I had some cannoli from Termini Brothers when I was back in the States over the holidays...I now realize I didn't take a photo :( They were delicious though! They were one of my favorite, sinful stops in the Terminal when I lived in Philly!
I just loove that photo ! It is the best!! Termini cannoli is one of the best ever! I only bought 2 as I didn't want to eat more than 1 but was tempted to get more!! :)
You know, I've never had a cannoli. I know: shocker, right? I can't seem to find them here anywhere. Maybe I should make one myself from scratch.
