10 Awesome FREE Activities in NYC

NYC is considered one of the most expensive cities in the world. The hotel prices are some of the top in the world you will come across. For all the expensive options, what I love is that there are tons of FREE options as well. I personally do not like to skimp on my hotel, especially if I am staying a few days. The hotel should be clean and safe, and the location should be close to activities/public transport. It is pretty easy to do activities in NYC with no charge, and enjoy yourself a great deal. You probably will even learn something along the way! Here is my personal list, not the whole list of course, for top activities that are FREE in NYC. I hope it helps you plan your trip to visit this most wonderful city we are so lucky to have to savor!

Throwback Thursday "Central Park in 1892"

A very cool shot of Central Park - Terrace Fountain and the Lake - The Mall taken May 1892. The design is by Miss Emma Stebbins, a New York sculptor: and represents the angel blessing the waters of the pool of Bethesda. In her left hand the angel holds a branch of lilies, emblem of purity. The four figures supporting the basin symbolize Temperance, Purity, Health, and Peace.The fountain commemorates the Croton water system, which first brought fresh water to New York City in 1842. The photo is from the NY Public Library collection. I think it's pretty cool we can still walk in this area and enjoy this gorgeous fountain, some 124 years later!!

Throwback Thursday "Central Park Snow 1900"

I felt after this weekend, we needed a nice vintage photo of a snow scene! This was from about 1900 in Central Park and so lovely. I felt bad for NYC this weekend with all the snow they received, but it must have been pretty cool walking around with no traffic anywhere! My Mom used to tell me stories of when she was young that they always got so much snow during the winter months. Thank goodness my area didn't receive as much as New York City, but we still had to get the snowplow out to clean our sidewalks and driveways. I am lucky to have a nice neighbor who cleans my driveway for me, but I know not everyone is so lucky. These kids look like they are having such a grand time in this photo. I bet many kids this weekend had the same kind of fun in the most fabulous Central Park!

Photo Gallery Tuesday "Summer in Central Park"

Central Park in the summer is just a really lovely time. How relaxing does this look? Did you know they even have a zoo? I finally made it there in 2012, need to get back again, the penguins were AMAZING! I never saw them in person before, I could stare at them for hours. Just makes you smile! What is really nice is purchase a to-go lunch and head to the park to enjoy.

A Walk in Central Park

The very first Central Park commission was appointed between 1857 and 1870. This park has so much history to it and really takes you away from the hustle and bustle we know New York City can be. There are so many adventures here from the Zoo, Walking Tours, Pedicab Tours, Bike Rentals and Tours just to name a few. They also have many free events that are held if you are looking for something for a family on a budget. I think the best way to enjoy the park is to walk at your own pace and take in all the beauty it has to offer. Shall we .........

Bethesda Terrace 

I just love this ceiling of Bethesda Terrace which was restored in 2007. While the conservancy restored as many tiles as possible, there were some tiles that were damaged beyond repair. The new tiles were manufactured by hand by Maw and Company in England. Of the 15,876 original tiles that were removed, only about 10% needed to be fully replaced. The ceiling of the arcade has 49 panels, each with 324 tiles. The restoration was eventually completed at a cost of $7 million. 

If you happen to be in the area of the park of West 71 and 74th Streets, you can visit Strawberry Fields named as a tribute to John Lennon. It is quite a special place indeed.

Photo Gallery Tuesday "Sheep Meadow"

This is Sheep Meadow, in the fabulous park that is called Central. Open from May to mid-October, this is a wonderful time of the year to visit. The name came from the 200 sheep placed here in 1864, and housed in a Victorian building within the Meadow. Then, in 1934, they were moved to Prospect Park, Brooklyn and were replaced with Tavern on the Green. It is quite lovely to pick up some food items, and bring it here on a glorious day, and enjoy the view. New York City does not get any better than a picnic in Central Park.
