The South Street Seaport after Sandy Still Recovering

The South Street Seaport was one of the hardest hit by storm sandy and four months later, it is still a ghost town. When I visited with a bus trip I ran for charity in 2009, the whole bus was enjoying the great views, restaurants and shops in the area. Now it is a totally different story.

The fabulous boats are mostly all that remains as many of the stores and restaurants are still closed. The restaurants that are trying to re-open are having problems getting enough funding to do so as the grants given are not enough. Some places need around $300,00 to $400, 000 to re-open, and are only given grants of $100,00 which make it quite difficult. During the storm, many shops and restaurants had as much as 8 feet of water inside.
I wanted to write this post to let folks know that this once fabulous area is still hurting and in need of help. There is a petition to sign for support in saving the seaport coalition which you can find HERE and would be great if you could help them out. If we can be united, hopefully we can save this historic seaport.

Thanks for sharing this information. I have not been down to the Seaport since Sandy. My husband and I enjoyed having lunch down there in the summer and going to the shops. It's such a shame! I didn't know about the petition, I will check it out.

It is so sad...the area was struggling a bit even before Sandy, but the storm was a knock out punch. I remember when it first opened and it was "the place to be in Manhattan"! This is a great cause, Rosemary...thanks for sharing! xoxo

Thank you ladies! I felt this was an issue to bring to everyone's attention Would be great if it could get back to how it once was. Positive vibes.

Thanks so much for sharing this information! I live a couple blocks from the Seaport and almost tear up every time I walk down there. I keep hoping I'll see some progress, but so far there hasn't been much. So devastating :(
