Nicola's Marketplace Biscotti

I recently had the pleasure of tasting biscotti from Nicola's Marketplace. The website has amazing Italian foods which all look really wonderful and freshly made. Nothing beats Italian cooking, you can use the most simple ingredients and the dish comes out amazing!

A little bit from their website:
Founded by Chef Nicola, the Marketplace was started in 2021 with a mission to bring customers a delightful experience with every order. Chef Nicola is passionate about high quality and taste when it comes to creating the ultimate culinary experience.

I liked the fact that they were not rock hard, my Mom's recipe is for a very soft biscotti which I love. If I don't want to dip them in espresso or coffee or tea, I can eat them on their own. Lots of cranberry in this one and hint of orange. Just enough.

I love chocolate in general but when you pair with hazelnut or walnut, it's magic! These flavors were right on point, not too sweet and just perfect. The biscotti is also small size which is nice as well, especially if you want a few for breakfast. They make a very nice light dessert after dinner, 3 of them would be perfect after a heavy meal.

You can really see them up close in these photos, they are really wonderful and I would highly suggest you give them a try if you are a biscotti lover!
Just look at all the cranberries and pistachio !!!

Please be sure to follow me on Instagram for lots of photos and activity of my travels to NYC. I would be delighted to see you there, be sure to say "hi"

**I was sent biscotti from Nicola's Marketplace for the purpose of this review. The opinions herein are based on my own experience and are my own.

La Pecora Bianco NoMad

One of the spots I checked out in the city before the pandemic started was La Pecora Bianco in the NoMad district. Since that time, they now have locations in Midtown, Soho, Bryant Park and the Meatpacking district. This place is really wonderful for Italian food, and my friend and I enjoyed our late lunch.

Everything tastes homemade because it is and you can really tell the difference.

There is nothing like enjoying fresh pasta, it just melts in your mouth.

Walking around the NoMad area, you see this wonderful view of the Gibson Girl and the Empire State Building against a very blue sky, all is right in the world.

There are so many new spots opening up in the city that I will be telling you about, and this place is no exception. If you are in any of these areas, and desire great Italian fare, this is the spot for you!!

Awesome New Dessert Spots on UWS

Hope you are all doing well. I am going to be posting some information regarding new openings in the city as well as old places that have re-opened for business. Who would have ever thought the long road this pandemic would be, I sure did not at all. So many business have closed in NYC and around the world, and we need to try to support those who remain open or are re-opening as best we can. I have been ordering from many places online having food and other items delivered.

If you are planning to travel to NYC, keep in mind to check the hours of places you wish to visit as their hours may have changed. It seems places are not open their normal hours as they were prior to COVID. As of September 13, 2021, you need to provide proof of at least 1 does of coronavirus vaccine for a variety of activities, indoor dining - gyms - Broadway shows - performances - museums.

The  Excelsior Pass  (for those vaccinated in New York) and NYC Covid Safe (for those vaccinated outside New York), are the 2 apps you need to use, but paper is fine too.

The Upper West Side is one of my favorite places in the city. They are having some wonderful new dessert spots opening that I thought I would tell you about! Mark these on your Google calendar for places to go when you are able to visit the city again! They all sound pretty amazing!!

The amazing Italian chocolate and gelato company, Venchi, is planning to open a new shop in the location where L'Occatine was located after closing this year being in that location for 31 years. The spot is 198 Columbus Avenue (corner of 69th Street) and although I was sad to see L'OCCATINE close, replacing it with Venchi makes me smile! Venchi also opened another shop at Columbus Circle 1796 Broadway between 58th and 59th Streets. Founded in 1878, the gelato will just make you very happy and the chocolate selections are out of this world good. They do ship their products, you will need to wait till summer is over for chocolate to be able to be shipped but I would highly recommend if you cannot get there in person! You will not be disappointed!

Venchi just makes me so darn happy

Magnolia Bakery is opening a new location right across the street from the soon to be open Venchi. I was never a person to stand in line for Magnolia baked goods, they are tasty but for some reason, they don't rock my world.

Kee’s Chocolates has opened at 228 Columbus Avenue, between 70th and 71st Streets. I had the pleasure of trying their chocolate at an another location and all I can say is "WOW" - just amazing flavors and texture. They do ship their fantastic chocolates once summer heat is over, so if you can't get there in person, support them by ordering online.

Truffles to die for

Two additional recent dessert spots that have opened  include Janie’s “Life Changing Baked Goods” at 212 West 80th Street (pie crust cookies) which do ship online as well and Zai’s Dessertery at 468-470 Amsterdam Avenue which is their first location in NYC. They have wonderful French macarons, ice cream, cupcakes and stuffed crepes. They both look like two fabulous places I need to check out asap!

A few more awesome dessert spots opening soon are Chip City Cookies at 370 Columbus Avenue - I have yet to try these cookies but from what I see online, they look pretty amazing!

A second Blue Marble Ice Cream at 2058 Broadway - I am a huge ice cream lover and the Blue Marble is quite tasty indeed!

Maman, at a location which is currently undisclosed. Maman is a very exciting French spot so elegant  for desserts, a light bite to eat and coffees/teas. I have visited their shop in the Nomad area, but only when I was in the city for 4th of July holiday as they were always too busy before. I am glad to see they are opening more locations in other spots in the city so hopefully they will be easier to enjoy. They do ship their cookies, and I have had some sent to me while not being able to get to the city. They are also coming out with a wonderful cookbook September 14th if you wish to check that out. I somehow think I will not be able to create their masterpieces at home but I just may try!

The most amazing banana bread you will ever enjoy !

I hope you all stay healthy and that you can venture back to NYC very soon. The city needs us back just as much as we need it. The city has so much to offer, Broadway - Architecture - Dining - Culture - Art just to name a few! Thank you for following the blog and here's to more wonderful posts about where to go in NYC !

KEEPING EASTER TRADITIONS ALIVE

Happy Easter for those who celebrate today! I hope you are all doing well and staying healthy. I feel like we are getting to the end of this horrible time in the world, and looking forward to heading back to the city in the next few months. There will be more blog posts here as we start to see what is new and exciting in NYC !

Spending the holiday home this year, I decided to make the Easter pizza's my Mom used to make. My Mom passed in 2015 which seems like the other day but is 6 years ago. I baked with her for many years, but never tried to make these solo. I am not great with crust and rolling dough, but she tried to show me as best she could. This meat pie is also known as Pizza Chiena or Pizza Rustica and there are many different fillings. The one my Mom made has genoa salami, ham, Munster and Parmigiano Reggiano cheese, the crust recipe is my Dad's Mom's recipe. I made this solo in 2015, the year she passed, and was shocked that I did it very easily. I guess I was learning all that time with her not even knowing it.

My Mom used to make these in cookie sheets or large pyrex dishes because she gave some to her brothers and sisters for the holidays. Her original recipe consisted of 13 eggs, 2 pounds of ham/munster cheese and 1 pound of salami. My Dad used to help her cut all the filling the night before and then she would bake the next day. Thank goodness she reduced the recipe to bake in a pie plate which we did at the end because it was just us eating it. They do freeze well so it's a nice surprise to pull out in the summer when you want a light meal with a salad.

The smell from this is incredible. I must say, not every Italian can cook. I have a few members of my family who just cannot make anything edible so I am thrilled that I did inherit my Mom's talents. I really never had the reason to cook, but when my Mom got sick, I had to take over. To my and Mom's suprise I could cook. When she told me I was a good cook, that was the best compliment to hear from her. I feel bad my Dad never got to witness my cooking and he would have been proud of me making the Easter recipes from his Mother.

The finished product ! The smell in the house is just amazing and makes me think of wonderful memories with my family.

The inside is so tasty, we normally ate this cold but you could heat it a bit in a microwave if you wished. It looks and tastes just like my Mom's version. I can't explain how I do it, it just happens.

This year I decided to make the ricotta pie, same crust, but a sweet version. My Mom made hers with ricotta, maraschino cherries and Parmigiano cheese. I decided to change it up a bit, omit the Parmigiano cheese and add mini chocolate chips with vanilla. Reminds me of a cannoli filling. I actually got the 2nd to last jar of cherries at my local Wegmans.

I have never done a lattice top but always thought they looked pretty. I knew we had the cutter to use as well as Mom used it for ravioli making. I figured it would make it a bit lighter than having a full crust on top, as my Mom would bake.

Looks pretty good before it goes in the oven. I am very excited to try this one as this is the first time making it on my own. I honestly feel my Mom with me when making these recipes. It's a wonderful feeling as I miss her and my Dad so very much.

The finished product looks pretty good. I hope that you are enjoying the holiday with your family and friends this year. It's been a heck of a year and a half, but we are almost through it, and it will make us all stronger for sure.

HAPPY EASTE

2020 NYC Foodie Gift Guide

This is not a sponsored post

I know so many of you are total foodies, and I just love the idea of sending friends and family food gifts especially from NYC! I really love giving gifts, I like to really surprise people with unique items. I really feel with the internet, there is no reason for a boring gift. It shouldn't exist! Here are some items for the foodie friend or family member that will make them very happy Christmas morning. All of these places SHIP their items, so in this year of COVID, it is very easy to send someone a fabulous gift right to their front door!

Our friends at L.A. Burdick have the most amazing chocolates, including these mice! For the chocolate lover, they will be thrilled to receive any gift from this shop. They ship from their website, along with some chocolate penguins and snowmen! A very unique gift!

Eataly is the Italian dream for the foodie lover. Even if you cannot get there in person, they offer gift baskets online. Another fun idea is to purchase one of the cooking classes for someone as a surprise. The big thing lately is not purchasing "things" but "memories" and that would be something very memorable. Eataly does have an online shop which I have purchased from and is very easy to enjoy authentic Italian foods!

Veniero's is a fantastic Italian bakery which is in business since 1894. I was lucky enough to visit a few times and their cannoli is some of the BEST I ever enjoyed. They sell quite a few items online and in 2011 I ordered one of my Mom's favorite, Struffoli, which is fried dough covered in honey. My Grandmother used to make it, but my Mom never attempted but loved it. I also got a box of their rainbow cookies which were just so darn good! Wonderful way to support a small business and have tasty items delivered to your door or friends/family!

My favorite, New York Gourmet Coffee, which has every flavor of coffee available in Decaf. It is so hard to find lots of flavored coffee in Decaf, and these folks do it right! They do have non-flavored coffee and flavored regular coffee available. Josh, the owner, is the nicest guy and I am always happy to recommend his coffee to everyone! This is the only coffee I drink!

Our friends at Fat Witch Bakery ship most of their items from their website. Their brownies are like fudge, what a great gift for your friends and family! Gift boxes and gift tins (which are great keepsakes) are available,  logo mugs are fun and you can even send a Fat Witch cookbook! The brownies also freeze very well if you purchase in advance of Christmas to serve on the holiday.

Fishs Eddy is a most excellent and fun shop! Whimsical designs, vintage pattern kitchenware at very affordable prices. Very unique gift ideas, great for the hard to buy person, and will give them a good laugh as well! I prefer purchasing online so I don't have to carry the items all through the city. This is one of the small businesses that has been really hurting with no tourists in the city. A wonderful way to support them and give totally fantastic gifts to your loved ones!

Jacques Torres is known as Mr. Chocolate for a reason! His chocolates make a fantastic holiday gift. The hot chocolate and wicked hot chocolate are most memorable drinking by the fireplace on a winter night. The chocolate chip cookies are to die for as well as the mudslide for the chocolate lovers. My favorites are the chocolate covered cornflakes and cheerios. They make such a unique gift for folks young and old! There is a wonderful selection online for shopping safely.

Baked by Melissa is just a really fun, fun gift for anyone! They make fantastic mini cupcakes, muffins and french macarons! They offer shipping on their website, and whomever receives these will be very happy, and will probably not want to share! My faves are the cupcakes and macarons, but the muffins are tasty too!

Afternoon Tea is a wonderful experience especially in New York City. You can give your family or friend a gift card to take them to Afternoon Tea! This falls into the "experiences" part of a gift, which I feel are so much better than "things" because it is a memory they will have forever! I cherish the monthly teas my Mom and I attended as they bring back such happy memories. You can check out my top 10 Afternoon Teas in the city to make your choice. The Plaza and The Peninsula are my two absolute top favorites! In this year of COVID, you can provide a gift certificate for folks to use when it is safe to do Afternoon Tea in person.

Momofuku Milk Bar birthday cake truffles are one heck of an experience. These make a fabulous gift, and you can have them shipped direct from their website. The assorted cookie tin is a good pick as well, and for the chocolate lover they have chocolate malt cake balls. Goldbelly has many items from New York City available for shipping to make a food lover so happy on Christmas Day!

This is for sure not going to be like any other holiday season we have celebrated. But we need to enjoy as best we can and with a special food gift to family and friends, or yourself, it gives us something to smile about. I hope I have given you some ideas you may not have thought about for the upcoming holiday season. If you have any questions about shopping in the city for your favorite foodie or gourmet, feel free to send me an email. I will gladly help out any way I can.

Please stay safe, wear a mask and social distance when you need to. We will get through this year stronger than we ever were before.

My Christmas Eve Traditions

Christmas Eve was always my favorite part of the holiday. We always had our main meal this night, the Feast of the Seven Fishes, and it was so yummy! My Aunts and Uncles would come over, we would open gifts after dinner, and there would be wrapping paper all over the place! It was fun to see them become kids again opening their presents. Once I became an adult, I was sure to give my parents stockings each year, filled with small gifts. When I was little, my parents actually put up the tree Christmas Eve after I went to bed. I find it interesting other countries do that as well.

Here are some traditions for this wonderful holiday from the fun website WhyChristmas :

Christmas Eve has many of its own customs and traditions. The one that mostly still exists today is going to a Midnight Mass Church Service. In many countries, especially Catholic ones such as Spain, Mexico, Poland and Italy, this is the most important Church service of the Christmas season. People might fast during Christmas Eve (not eat any meat or fish usually) and then the main Christmas meal is often eaten after the Midnight Mass Service in these countries. In some other countries, such as Belgium, Finland, Lithuania and Denmark the meal is eaten in the evening and you might go to a Midnight Service afterwards!

The Midnight Mass Communion Service (or 'Christ-Mas') was a very special one as it was the only one that was allowed to start after sunset (and before sunrise the next day), so it was held at Midnight!

Christmas Eve is also the day when people in some countries, like Germany, Sweden and Portugal exchange their presents. Christmas Eve is also Santa's busiest day of the year when he has to travel over 220 million miles (355 million km) to get to every house on earth!

In many European countries including Germany, Serbia and Slovakia, Christmas Eve is the day when the Christmas Tree is brought into the house and decorated.

It was also traditional to bring the Yule Log into the house and light it on Christmas Eve. It was lit using a piece of the previous years log and then would burnt non-stop until Twelfth Night (6th January). Tradition also said that any greenery such as Holly, Ivy and Mistletoe should only be taken into the house on Christmas Eve.

I hope everyone has a lovely Christmas Eve!
