New York City Easter Events 2018

Easter is a lovely time. We are hoping to get into the warmer weather in the East, and we get to enjoy chocolate as well as wearing a fancy hat. When I was little, my Uncle worked for a greenhouse, and he always brought me my Easter corsage Easter Sunday morning. My Mom made many of my clothes, she knew how to sew very well, and I always looked my Easter best! I made my first Easter pizza by myself and it came out pretty well. I guess working with my Mom making it for so many years, you do learn even though you don't realize that is happening. You can read all about the Italian Easter Pizza HERE. I have very fond memories of the holiday with my family, I am hoping to start a new tradition by spending the holiday in New York City. 1. Easter Parade & Bonnet Festival on 5th Avenue - a fun event, regular folks walking along Fifth Avenue with fantastic Easter hats, some are very creative!

2. A fabulous Easter brunch - be sure to make reservations on this busy day, so many fabulous places to choose from in this wonderful city. I always use Opentable

3. Shop for some of the most amazing chocolates in various shops in the city - my favorites L.A. Burdick, Vosges and MarieBelle

4. St Patrick's Cathedral Easter Mass - Easter Sunday 04/01/18 Masses: 7:00, 8:00, 8:45am to 10:15am (This mass requires tickets), 12 noon, 1:00, 4:00 (Spanish), and 5:30pm
                 
5. Broadway Show - be sure to purchase in advance as they sell out quickly on this day. I like to use the site Theater Mania for some discounted tickets, you will never find me in that line in Times Square!

6. Empire State Building - if the weather is nice, it's always fantastic to see the views of this amazing city

7. Metropolitan Museum of Art - there is never a day not to visit this museum, but they are open Easter Sunday

8. NY Botanical Garden - hours on Easter Sunday/Monday are 10am - 6pm Their amazing Orchid exhibit is on display during this time

9. If you cannot get into St. Pat's for mass, there are many other gorgeous churches that you can attend Easter Mass in the city.

10. Macy's Flower Show - usually runs each year during this time, March 25 to April 8, 2018 and the them this year is "Once Upon a Springtime".

Throwback Thursday " St Patrick's Cathedral 1950's"

This shot was taken by Frank Larson. That is St. Patrick's Cathedral on the other side of 5th Avenue, and where the folks are walking is Rockefeller Center. I love these type of photos where I have been in that exact spot! I just love all the detail here, including the cool cars of the 1950's! Mr. Larson's photos were discovered in his attic by his grandson. What a wonderful find indeed.

Happy Good Friday

This is a lovely shot from my visit to St Patrick's Cathedral. I hope everyone who celebrates Good Friday has a very nice holiday. I am excited to be attending a Sicilian Wine Class tomorrow in the city, and cannot wait to show you all the details!

St Patrick's Cathedral

St Patrick's Cathedral is one of the most famous tourist spots in New York City. I have visited many times, and walked past a zillion times, always enjoying it's beauty. This is the back view.  

For some odd reason, I never took photos inside until recently. Sometimes when you visit places often, you don't think to do photography while you are there.  

How lovely is this? The cathedral was dedicated on May 25, 1879. This is really a must see for any visitor. It is truly a magical place to see in person.  

One of the times when I was walking into the cathedral, a man and two little girls were ahead of me. He was telling them they were going to see where mommy and daddy got married. I thought how wonderful that must be to get married in such a historic cathedral.  

People were actually sketching here which I thought was wonderful. If you are an artist, New York City is a fabulous place to find inspiration.  

The stained glass windows are breathtaking.  

 

This was the alter all the way at the end of the cathedral and after I took this, I was told no photography. It came out beautiful but I wished they had signs there regarding no photos. 

The cathedral has had restoration through the years, here from their website:

Each generation has added to her splendor. Her spires were completed in 1888 and The Lady Chapel in 1908. Her Kilgen Organs were installed from 1928 to 1930. Major capital improvements were made in the 1940’s and the 1970’s under Cardinals Spellman and Cooke, respectively. The Kilgen organs were restored in the mid 1990s, and the gem of the Cathedral, the Lady Chapel, was restored in 2003. Recent restorations have included the main altar, the chapels of Saints Anthony, Elizabeth, Jean Baptiste de la Salle, Louis and Michael, and the sacristy. There is a new shrine in honor of Our Lady of Czestochowa which includes paintings and statuary of Saints Casimir, Faustina, Jadwiga, Maximilian Kolbe and Stanislaus Kostka. In 2005, the chapels of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Saint Andrew were also restored. 

It has been recently undergoing a major renovation and they are taking donations to help with the cost. They are restoring the exterior and interior as well as the fabulous stained glass windows. You can donate HERE, which goes for a great cause.  It will be a wonderful accomplishment for this work of art to be standing in all it's glory for centuries to come.
