In my quest for great vintage New York City photography, I came across a cool website called Howards Hollow. They sell vintage photographs from 1850's to 1950's of not only NYC, but other US cities such as Chicago and Philadelphia. Their prices are very reasonable, I just may order a photo myself and frame for in my home. I just love these photographs, they tell so many stories.
This shot of Mulberry Street in 1900 really shows how crowded the area was at that time. By 1900 there were 50 times as many people living in lower Manhattan, no city grew as large so fast. The immigrants were not welcomed when arriving in NYC, the group that arrived last was often the most hated. It had to be one heck of a time for these folks coming here to make a better life for themselves and their families.
