Maria Sharapova

I am not sure if all my followers are aware, but I am a big tennis fan and love to photograph the players since attending my first US Open in 1998. Maria Sharapova has always been one of my favorites to photograph as the camera really loves her. The photo above is from the 2003 US Open, she turned pro in 2001 and won her first of 3 Grand Slams, Wimbledon in 2004.
She always had such intensity during her matches, even in these photos you can see it in her face.
This was during a doubles match at the US Open with Max Mirnyi so I caught a little smile
She won a great match today at the French Open to put her in the Quarterfinals of the only Grand Slam tournament she has never won. She showed real guts today and kept positive even though she was down in the second set 1-4.......always a fighter on the court.....
this shot from 2009 shows a bit older Maria but the same intense look on her face....she has won career prize money of over 14 million US dollars and her off the court earnings are pretty huge. In August 2010, Forbes magazine named her the highest-paid female athlete earning 24.5 million US dollars.
I have always enjoyed watching her play and I think she is pretty inspiring to young people that if you work hard, you can be successful. She has come back from serious shoulder surgery and is back in the top 10 of the world's best tennis players. I wish her luck this week in the French Open, her worst surface is clay, and really hope she takes home the title.

Happy Memorial Day 2011

I would like to wish all the US followers out there a very Happy Memorial Day!

Memorial Day is a US Federal Holiday observed the last Monday in May. It commemorates US Service Members who died while in Military Service. It begun as a ritual of remembrance and reconciliation after the Civil War, by the early 20th century, Memorial Day was an occasion for more general expressions of memory, as ordinary people visited the graves of their deceased relatives, whether they had served in the military or not.

Chris Noth and The LOVA Charity Collection

This past month, Chris Noth visited the ladies on The View. He gave them a gift of his new charity tea with LOVA  to benefit the Rainforest Action Network. The green tea blend sounds really excellent and you would be helping a great cause to purchase some for you and maybe a friend for a unique type of gift.

You can check out their other wonderful and original flavors of teas HERE to place an order.

The Gilded Age and Huguette Clark's Passing at 104

one of the last photos of Huguette Clark from the Associated Press in 1930

As an avid reader of the New York Times, I read an obituary the other day that really sparked my interest. I am a huge fan of the Gilded Age, a period during the 1870’s and 1880’s, where the US economy grew at the fastest rate in history. It was a time for great wealth due to the large production of items like wheat, corn, coal and railroads. The famous names during this period were John D. Rockefeller, Andrew W. Mellon, Andrew Carnegie, Henry Flagler, J.P. Morgan, Cornelius Vanderbilt and the Astor family.  The obituary I came across was for Huguette Clark, who passed away at 104.

She was listed as the last link to New York’s Gilded Age, which is quite remarkable. The obituary is quite a read and can be found at the New York Times website HERE
Huguette in 1923  the photo is from Copper King Mansion

The fact she was living in such a time of splendor and grandor, it was too bad they couldn’t keep her in one of her many mansions with caregivers to attend to her needs. It was her choice to go into hospital care and not stay in one of her 3 homes. She once called money "a menace to happiness".
the Fifth Avenue mansion which stood from 1907 to 1927; photo via the New York Historical Society

This story is really quite intriguing....to say the least. And the more you read about it, the more wild it gets. Her estate is worth $500 US million dollars. There are no heirs.

one of my photos taken at a visit to the Kykuit Estate
my side view photo of the house...photography was not allowed inside the home

Kykuit is one of the John D. Rockefeller mansions located in Hyde Park, New York that I was lucky to visit. I was totally in awe of the place and if you get the opportunity to visit, do so. John D Rockefeller donated over $500 million to various charities, slightly over half of his entire new worth during the Gilded Age period. Huguette's father was the second richest at the time with John D. Rockefeller being number one. You can visit Kykuit’s  website HERE.

Being in the circle of the Astors, Vanderbilts, Rockefellers during that time must have been quite amazing but upon reading her story, her life seemed a bit sad. I also question the care of her and her large wealth similar to the issues with Brooke Astor since her death in 2007. To think she ate lunches of sardines and crackers really just amazed me.

Her estate in Connecticut can be purchased for $24 million dollars is quite a house. You can view it HERE. News reports say it is being sold by her attorney and accountant but who receives the money from the sale is still a mystery. I think it is such a shame that a gorgeous home like that has been empty for so many decades.

A very in-depth article on the Clark's is located HERE by MSNBC and worth a look. I think this whole story makes you really think being rich is not the answer to happiness. I will be watching this storyline in the news to see what comes out of investigations charging her attorney and accountant were not acting on her best behalf. At least she is now at peace.

If you have an interest in history, the Gilded Age is quite an interesting time to research. Please feel free to leave your thoughts/comments.

Impressions of Notre Dame.
Enter a vision of “Romantic Paris,” featuring a fantasy wedding scene at the architectural wonder, Notre Dame.  The exhibit recreates the splendor of a full wedding using white lilies to highlight the silence of the cathedral; bright, romantic splashes of red for the grand wedding ceremony; and statues of gargoyles using succulents and other plant materials.

as we know the theme of the flower show was Springtime in Paris so how lovely a wedding
a Notre Dame one at that .....
what a fabulous table setting! and those flowers were amazing.....
it was traditional yet contemporary at once ....
to give you an idea of the whole setting.......
Robertson's did a great job with this display
would you have an outdoor wedding here??
