A Trip to Longwood Gardens at Christmas

Visiting Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, Pa., outside of Philadelphia, is a special treat during the Christmas season. The whole area consists of 1,077 acres of gardens, woodlands and meadows.

Pierre du Pont was born in 1870. His early years were influenced by the area’s natural beauty and by the du Pont family’s long tradition of gardening. But not even Pierre himself could have predicted that he would someday become one of the country’s most influential gardeners.

It didn’t take Pierre long before he started making his mark on what he called Longwood. In 1907, Pierre laid out his first garden – the 600-foot-long Flower Garden Walk, which is today one of Longwood’s most popular gardens.
This just makes you feel so calm, doesn't it ?

The flowers at the bottom are poinsettia's and I purchased one when they first came out at Longwood Gardens. It is called the Poinsettia Rose and it is just beautiful.

If you are ever in this area, Longwood Gardens is a real treat for the flower lover. During the holiday season it is extra special, and is fun for folks of all ages. The lights at night start to come on around 3:30pm and really make you feel like you are in a magical wonderland!!

A Longwood Christmas soars this season with our bird-inspired display.

From trees adorned with nests and feathered friends, to topiary swans in our Exhibition Hall, to birdhouses, owls, and bald eagles decorating our tree houses, this holiday season flies high. Our Music Room depicts a festive Peacock Masquerade Ball, featuring elegant table settings and an 18-foot rotating tree. Stroll outside where colorful fountains dance, glimmering snowflakes hang overhead, and a half- million lights illuminate more of our outdoor gardens than ever before.
