Retail and Event Highlights for April 2013
In addition to being a major transportation hub, Grand Central Terminal (GCT) is a midtown shopping and dining destination known for its mix of restaurants, cocktail lounges, high-end informal eateries, gourmet food and wine shops, and a vibrant array of specialty and internationally renowned shops.  The Terminal celebrates its 100th anniversary throughout 2013.  Below are retail and event updates for April at GCT. 

Retail:

·         In honor of the Centennial, many of Grand Central Terminal’s retail tenants are offering special giveaways for the first 100 customers on April 10, 2013. Offers are good while supplies last and are subject to change. Participating tenants and deals can be found here: www.grandcentralterminal.com/100FREE 

·         Centennial partner Carvel, and Fudgie the Whale®, will give away Lil’ Flying Saucers® and ice cream coupon books at the official taxi stand at the West Side of the terminal from 2 p.m.-6 p.m. on April 19, 2013.

Events:

  • Ongoing through July 7, 2013 - On Time/Grand Central at 100 (8 a.m. - 8 p.m. Mon - Fri; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekends, New York Transit Museum Gallery Annex and Store at GCT) - Curated by MTA Arts for Transit, this exhibition features more than a dozen contemporary artists in a variety of media who capture and reimagine the passage of time during Grand Central’s first 100 years. Includes work by Penelope Umbrico, Jim Campbell, Paul Himmel, Lothar Osterburg, Alexander Chen, Vik Muniz, Walter Martin and Paloma Munoz, Ian Dicke and more.

  • Jack Daniels kicks off its “Live at the Landmark” concert series in Vanderbilt Hall April 8 at 6:30 p.m. with a performance by Okkervil River. Fans can enter to win tickets here, as they tickets are not available for purchase.

  • April 9, 2013 MAS Arts Forum - Grand Central Terminal: Design for the Next Century (6:30 p.m. - 8 p.m., Vanderbilt Hall, free but registration required) - This panel reconvenes (from the 2012 MAS Summit for New York City) Roger Duffy, SOM; Brandon Haw, Foster + Partner; and Claire Weisz, WXY, along with James von Klemperer, KPF, with moderator Susan Szenasy, editor in chief of Metropolis, to further explore the provocative ideas on how to re-think the public realm around Grand Central and to consider what the next generation of buildings could look like for this area. How should we expect future buildings to function and, through design, how can they contribute to better circulation, mobility, and livability for one of the world’s most vital neighborhoods?

·         April 10, 2013 - Keeping Time/Poets & Musicians Honor Grand Central (7 p.m., Vanderbilt Hall) - A free Centennial event featuring poets from the re-launched Poetry in Motion program including Billy Collins, Aracelis Girmay, Jeffrey Yang and others, and performances by Music Under New York musicians that highlight the cultural inspirations of the world’s most famous train Terminal.  Presented by MTA Arts for Transit and the Poetry Society of America.

·         April 11, 2013 - Grand Central Talks (12 noon, 3:30 p.m. and 6 p.m., Vanderbilt Hall) - Authors, experts and historians discuss the development and construction of Grand Central Terminal, and consider its impact on New York City as well as the global transportation industry.  Organized by Metro-North Railroad and the New York Transit Museum, with assistance from the New York Public Library, this three-part event covers key events and eras in Grand Central’s 100-year history.

Session One: 12 p.m. – PIONEERS OF RAILROADING – A series of speakers will explore the stories of key players in the history of railroading and Grand Central Terminal.  Speakers include:
-          Carl Zimmerman, railroad historian and author; introduced by Alfred G. Vanderbilt, great-great-great-grandson of railroad entrepreneur and Terminal visionary “Commodore” Cornelius Vanderbilt
-          Kurt Schlichting, author and professor; introduced by the president of the American Society of Civil Engineers
-          John Sprague, author and grandson of Frank Sprague, who was the father of electric traction; introduced by the former Chief Engineer for the MTA Metro-North Railroad’s Maintenance of Way Department, Robert Walker

Session Two: 3:30 p.m. – A LANDMARK DECISION: The Battle to Save Grand Central – a panel of architects, community advocates and others recount the extraordinary efforts made in the 1970s to save the Terminal from destruction and the impact the effort had on New York and national historic landmarks.  Speakers include:
-          Laurie Beckelman, co-founder of Beckelman + Capalino, former Commissioner, NYC Landmarks Preservation
-          Fred Papert, President of the 42nd Street Development Corporation and retired senior partner of the advertising firm, Papert, Koenig, Lois
-          [Third panelist TBC] 
-          [Moderator TBC]

Session Three: 6 p.m. – WRITING GRAND CENTRAL
Speakers include:
-          Sam Roberts, urban affairs correspondent for The New York Times and author of the book Grand Central: How a Train Station Transformed America
-          Anthony W. Robins, historian, lecturer and co-author with the New York Transit Museum of the book Grand Central Terminal: 100 Years of a New York Landmark
-          Tony Hiss, author, lecturer and respected expert on the landscape and future of New York City, author of more than a dozen books, including The Experience of Places and In Motion: How We Experience Travel
-          Christopher Gray, journalist for The New York Times who has written extensively since 1987about architecture, historic preservation and New York City’s built landscape in his weekly “Streetscapes” column

·         April 20-April 22, 2013 - Earth Day (10 a.m. – 6 p.m., Vanderbilt Hall) – This celebration of Earth Day, including free live performances, kids' activities,           panel discussions and interactive displays about how to “green” one’s lifestyle and make New York a more sustainable city.
