Taste of the Seaport Oct. 17 2015

I wanted to give you a heads up on a great foodie festival coming up on October 17th called The Taste of the Seaport. I love the area, and we need to support the neighborhood as much as we can. This amazing festival of food and entertainment is a great way to raise funds for schools in the area. Please leave a comment if you do attend, and how you liked it! I don't think I will make it there this year, but will have to add to my calendar for 2016. It looks like a fun time!

Taste of the Seaport

Annual outdoor fall festival of food, beverage, live music, and family-friendly activities on cobblestone streets of New York City’s Historic Seaport. www.tasteoftheseaport.org

Enjoy an autumnal festival of food and community to raise funds for Spruce Street School, P.S. 397 and Peck Slip School, P.S. 343. Local merchants present culinary tastings in an outdoor event on historic South Street Seaport property. Musical entertainment, free children's activities plus a special booth run by Spruce and Peck students will add to the family-fun day.

All proceeds from the Taste of The Seaport go towards much-needed enrichment programs for the students of Peck Slip School, P.S. 343 and Spruce Street School, P.S. 397

The South Street Seaport after Sandy Still Recovering

The South Street Seaport was one of the hardest hit by storm sandy and four months later, it is still a ghost town. When I visited with a bus trip I ran for charity in 2009, the whole bus was enjoying the great views, restaurants and shops in the area. Now it is a totally different story.

The fabulous boats are mostly all that remains as many of the stores and restaurants are still closed. The restaurants that are trying to re-open are having problems getting enough funding to do so as the grants given are not enough. Some places need around $300,00 to $400, 000 to re-open, and are only given grants of $100,00 which make it quite difficult. During the storm, many shops and restaurants had as much as 8 feet of water inside.
I wanted to write this post to let folks know that this once fabulous area is still hurting and in need of help. There is a petition to sign for support in saving the seaport coalition which you can find HERE and would be great if you could help them out. If we can be united, hopefully we can save this historic seaport.

South Street Seaport's Gorgeous Views

South Street Seaport is really a wonderful place especially in the warmer months. It gives you a bit of calm, in a city known for being crazy 100% of the time. I do like the crazy myself, but this is nice too.
You can walk the Brooklyn Bridge on a lovely weather day.........

Explore large ships ..........
A fun time for the young boys and men in your life ........
Who would not love this view? To the right, I see one of my favorite buildings, The Chrysler Building.
If you have the chance to visit this area, I would say to do so. You have shopping, restaurants, the wonderful Fulton Stall Market on Saturdays/Sundays with live music. It is just another spectacular part of New York City that makes you smile!!

South Street Seaport

Here is the low-down on the Seaport from their website:

The Seaport and Pier 17 have a rich and diverse history as profound to New York City as Wall Street, Central Park or Times Square.  This cultural marketplace along the dynamic Lower Manhattan waterfront is a gateway to the harbor.  The neighborhood offers attractions, shops and restaurants for every taste.  Diverse year-round events are easily accessible by subway, car, ferry or bus. Concerts, street performers, boating, bike rentals, a farmers market, summer beach and winter celebrations abound.

The seaport is really a fun place to visit, great for kids with lots of activities going on and some really great views.
