Belle da Costa Greene, 1st Director Morgan Library

Belle da Costa Greene, pastel portrait by Paul César Helleu, ca. 1913

As we all have been horrified with the tragic events unfolding the last week, in addition to still dealing with the COVID 19 virus I personally hope that all these protests bring change to this world. Everyone should be treated with respect and dignity.

One of my favorite spots in New York City, The Morgan Library and Museum, showcased on their social media Belle da Costa Greene, the 1st Director of the Morgan Library. I just love the painting of her above, she looks so elegant!

Ms. Greene, who was born on my birthday December 13, 1883 was the librarian to J.P. Morgan until his death and then to his son, Jack Morgan. In 1924 the private collection was incorporated by the State of NY and the Board of Trustees appointed her the first Director of the Pierpont Morgan Library.

Ms. Greene was an expert in illuminated manuscripts and J.P. Morgan trusted her expertise as well as her ability to bargain with dealers, she would deal with millions of dollars buying and selling rare manuscripts, art and books for Mr. Morgan. She was educated at Harvard University. Can you imagine what a fantastic job this must have been!

In 1939 she was elected a Fellow of the Medieval Academy of America, only the 2nd woman and first known person of color.

Ms. Greene was a very fashionable lady, and known for her wonderful looks and designer wardrobe. She sure looks classy in the photo above. When J.P. Morgan passed away in 1913, he left Ms. Greene in his will $50,000 (equal to 1.3 million in 2019)

Ms. Greene retired from the Morgan Library in 1948 and passed away in New York City in 1950. What a wonderful legacy this woman has left behind for us to all enjoy.

A bust of Belle now stands prominently and proudly in the historic Library ( I must find that on my very next visit)

The Morgan Library & Museum announces the creation of two new two-year curatorial fellowships, the Belle da Costa Greene Curatorial Fellowships, to be awarded to promising scholars from communities historically underrepresented in the curatorial and special collections fields. Named for the Morgan’s first director, one of the most prominent American librarians and cultural leaders of the first half of the twentieth century and a woman of color, this full-time program will equip Fellows with a strong working knowledge of museum and special collections library operations and will provide Fellows with resources and mentorship to support them in their professional careers.

“An Illuminated Life” by Heidi Ardizzone is a wonderful book to read about her life. I hope this post brought you as much joy as it did me reading about her, and I am going to be looking for the book about her life to read even more. What an inspiring lady at a time when we are looking for inspiration.

Easter Brunch at The Morgan Dining Room

The Morgan Dining Room within the Morgan Library and Museum is a wonderful dining spot. They usually have special menus for Mother's Day and other holidays. I decided to spend my Easter Sunday there this year and it was lovely. It's a small space, nice to relax and enjoy good food. The setting is so lovely you feel like you are dining with Mr. Morgan himself!

They had an Easter menu for the whole weekend and I chose:

Smoked Salmon & Avocado Mousse with Sturgeon Caviar
Warm Breakfast Bread Basket
Seared Wild Bass
Rhubarb Cheesecake with Almond Crumble
Sparkling Aperitif

This was $49.00 in addition to your tip which I thought was very reasonable

I loved the glass the champagne was served in
This was just totally delish and so different. I love to try new things especially when in the city.

The sea bass was great except my first one was undercooked. I hate giving things back in restaurants but I couldn't eat it. They were very kind and brought me a whole new piece that was cooked correctly.
I thought the dessert was a bit underwhelming. I wanted to try rhubarb as never had before, it reminded me of strawberry which I am not a fan, so I wouldn't do that again. The cheesecake part was good, and it was a light dessert at the end of the meal.
Wonderful chocolate bunnies from Michel Cluizel which is a few streets down from the Morgan Library
If you are in the city for a holiday, and are looking for somewhere unique to dine, consider the Morgan Dining Room. It is a lovely spot and the food is tasty, prices are very reasonable.

A Trip to Chocolat Michel Cluizel

In keeping with my Christmas theme in June, who has rules anyway! My trip to Michel Cluizel on Madison Avenue was another joy. They have the most amazing chocolates and gift ideas for those who find chocolate an obsession! I popped in during the holidays to enjoy their hot chocolate, and I must say, it hit the spot. This location on Madison Avenue tends to not be full of tourists which I love and has small tables to sit and enjoy your chocolate fix. You can find coffee here as well as other fantastic desserts and it is just a small walk from my favorite Morgan Library and Museum. If you have not visited here yet, please add to your "to do" list. It will not disappoint.

Wayne Thiebaud Draftsman

This is a real fun post and one of my favorite artists, Wayne Thiebaud, exhibit at The Morgan Library and Museum last year. I was so thrilled to see this exhibit in one of my favorite museums in the city.

I was first introduced to Wayne Thiebaud's work, at Christies, this Tie Rack painting was for sale in 2015. The estimate was $1.4-$1.8 million US dollars and it sold for $3.4 million US dollars! The piece attracted me due to the colors, I love color, and just the method in how it was painted. When I got home I researched his work, only to find even more paintings I just loved. Mr. Thiebaud was born in 1920 and is still alive today. I find his work brings a smile to my face, and I am so thrilled to share this exhibit with you!
Even this simple work is just so darn wonderful

Love, love, love this one

This is very cool as well even though not much color is used, if any

Loved this one as well of a city street

How can you not fall in love with this work?

Mr. Thiebaud has said all his paintings are done from memory - pretty darn amazing if you ask me!
This one would make Willy Wonka or Dylan Lauren very happy!

After viewing these lovely works, nothing is more relaxing than some fried oysters at The Morgan Library restaurant. They were quite the tasty, I must say!

I hope you enjoyed this exhibit and be sure to Google Mr. Thiebaud's work to see more fantastic paintings. I purchased a print from the show and now have it hanging in my dining room. It makes me smile every time I walk by.
