A Stroll Through Grand Central Market

Do you believe February is almost gone? Just a few more days and March is here! I thought I would share some wonderful photos from the Grand Central Market which is always mouth watering.
The most amazing seafood will be found here, you cannot purchase it any fresher than this! I am a huge seafood fan, not really a meat eater, so this is my heaven.

These looked so beautiful, you feel bad eating them.

Wonderful selection of olives and pickels and the smell is quite nice too!
Italian cheese selection and meats is very extensive
You can also find fun gift ideas here too

These gluten free items looked really tasty
Who loves lemon cake? This would be high on your list.
The famous black and white cookies must be tried by all. They are pretty much like cake, so moist and vanilla flavored cookie.
Anything Jacques Torres makes will be yummy!
If you have never had gelato, downstairs at Jacques Torres is a must taste. It is so darn good, a bit better than your regular ice cream.

A Trip to Alleva Dairy on Grand Street

I will be up front with this post. It is a foodie galore post, so if you are hungry, be warned! Alleva Dairy on Grand Street in Little Italy is pure Italian heaven! Opened in 1892, it is old fashioned, fabulous Italian food. I had the chance to visit while on the Ahoy New York Tour  which I really enjoyed. Let's go in, shall we?
The windows were adorned with fabulous old time photos of the Italian family that started this shop
Okay these are INSANE and 3 for $2 is even more INSANE So so yummy!!
We visited at Easter time and they had all the fabulous Italian Easter pizzas. The Italian traditions in my family were always wonderful and I looked forward to each holiday with delight.
The inside is just amazing and the smells are even better
I would have purchased 1 of everything if I could carry it all home
Their Pizza Rustica, or Easter Pizza, looked very similar to the one I make at home. Italian food is made with love, fresh ingredients, simple, yet so tasty. You can never go wrong with the right ingredients and made in your own kitchen.
Fresh Mozzarella is to die for.....simple as that. If you have never had the fresh, try it as soon as possible You will never go back to the old stuff again
They have a great selection of cheeses and olive oils as well as other Italian products
Fresh Mozzarella with Prosciutto ( a dry cured ham that is very thinly sliced and melts in your mouth if
made properly) Pure Italian Heaven

Hmmmm these look interesting, don't you think?
More fresh ham and salami for your viewing pleasure
This set up is really lovely and you can see the huge selection Alleva offers
You know if the NYPD shops here, it must be quite good!!

I hope you enjoyed this little jaunt to Little Italy and Alleva. Italian cooking is all about fresh products and a few ingredients can make a meal extraordinary. Being full Italian, I have grown up with many of these products and being a "foodie" only comes natural to an Italian girl. The smell in our home of my Mom cooking sauce, with garlic and olive oil, is a memory I will always have quite fondly. I always say, if you want to smell up your house, do some cooking in your kitchen and it will be just fabulous!!

What is your favorite type of Italian food? Do tell .........

Eataly "The Savory Post"

This post is long overdue. Eataly is a must stop when in the city. The concept was taken from a high end Italian food market which first opened in Turin, Italy titled Eataly in 2007. The chefs Mario Batali, Lidia Bastianich and her son Joseph Bastianich were so impressed with the idea, they opened one in New York City August 2010.
This place is the ultimate food lover's paradise! You can shop for the BEST foods to make your own recipes at home, you can shop for prepared foods, you can eat here, you can learn how to cook here at La Scuola di Eataly !! Lots of choices for every visitor.
I was lucky to visit first thing in the morning, on a Tuesday, before it got really crowded. I did not know where to begin. Everything looked like something out of a magazine, We only have 50,000 square feet to walk through. Piece of cake.
Since this was my first stop of the day, I really did not buy too much but was a bit sad that I couldn't as everything was just so perfect. Perfect Food. Yep, that is it in a nutshell.
They even have a vegetable butcher here. Yes, you read that correct. The vegetable butcher will do whatever you need to your vegetables. Trim an artichoke, peel baby carrots - the butcher has it covered. The service is free, however I am not sure how often I would use it. Maybe if you were on your way home to cook, and didn't want to have to do the prep work, it would be handy.
In additional to the food, they have all types of kitchen products available
I loved all the happy colors here and I was very tempted to take something home but I behaved.
Gnocchi has to be one of my favorite pastas and we make it from scratch in my house. The pastas in front of the gnocchi look pretty good too!!
Pasta. You cannot imagine how many varieties of pasta is available here. The homemade kind as well as dry but oh so fresh as all direct from Italy. You can see a difference when you purchase pasta that has been made in Italy. It cooks faster because it is fresher and just tastes out-of-this-world.
Bread. Another amazing area of Eataly.
The amazing color of this soft bread with olive oil caught my eye.
This is a seating area to grab a bite to eat.
Meats and Cheeses. The selection here was just mind blowing.
We love lamb but cannot find alot of it in my local supermarkets. This was like lamb heaven. I felt really sad I could not take anything here home.
Salami. goes well with cheese. and crackers.
the cheeses were really works of art. I love watching all the work that goes into making a really good cheese, they take such care in the process and you can really taste it in the end result.
If you have never tried fresh mozzarella, you must. You will never go back to the old stuff again. Here they make it right in front of your eyes, which is oh so cool.

They had a very large gluten-free section, which I was surprised to see but with so many people that cannot eat gluten, good move on their part.

Eataly is really a fabulous destination. The products are the best you can find, and you will not be disappointed with anything purchased here.
