Throwback Thursday "Grand Central Oyster Bar"

July 31, 1974: When the Oyster Bar and Restaurant at Grand Central Terminal closed with little warning, diners and employees alike were dismayed. “When I want oysters on the half-shell and nothing more, where do I go?” asked one customer. However, it was expected to reopen soon (and did, with new management), and was reviewed favorably in The Times later that year (though the mussels, at $2.25, were deemed overpriced).“

I just love this place, and to see the prices above in 1974 brings a chuckle to just about everyone!
Their fried oysters, and oyster stew make me a very happy person!

A Trip to Grand Central Oyster Bar

I didn't get into the city before Christmas as it just didn't work out for me with my schedule. I was able to pop in the day after, it wasn't too crowded which was fabulous. I met the wonderfully talented milliner, Ellen Christine, for a late lunch at Grand Central Oyster Bar. We met through twitter a few years ago, and she is one of the nicest ladies in the land! 

The oyster bar first opened in 1913, and was re-invented in 1974 by Jerome Brody. If you love seafood, this is the place to check out. I feel the prices are very reasonable, and what you receive is just so darn yummy! I love the red and white check tablecloth! 

Oyster Stew is one of the their special dishes of course. I love oysters, and I make my own fried ones at home. My Mom and I used to make an oyster stuffing with cornbread that was to die for! The juice gave the stuffing so much flavor. Here is the link for that recipe from my favorite grocery store, Wegmans, HERE. 

New England Clam Chowder is my favorite. When I was small, and on vacation with my parents, I asked for it for breakfast! My foodie personality started young, and the place brought it for me too! This one was really very good, lots of clams and very tasty! 

Oyster crackers are always needed in the oyster stew. 

Oysters Rockefeller are so darn tasty and with the spinach, you feel like you are eating healthy! 

An espresso to end your meal is always a good idea! 

The decor has been turned back to it's original state, just lovely. I am so glad this landmark restaurant was saved, and that we can still enjoy it in the new year of 2015. 

A shot of the very large lobster tank to the left! Lobster is not one of my fave seafood, but most fish, salmon, clams. shrimp, crab are very welcome in my tummy! 

A hot fudge sundae for dessert is very good for the soul! This one was so big it was easy to share!

Photo Gallery Tuesday " Grand Central Oyster Bar"

The Grand Central Oyster Bar opened in 1913, yes, it is 100 years old! I am a huge fan of fried oysters, I make my own at home, but had to try theirs to see what all the rave was about. They were quite tasty, and the serving was pretty generous too! I know most people either love oysters or hate them, but they are quite a tasty treat. I have yet to try them raw, one of these days I will attempt. If you like oysters, or seafood in general ( I so prefer that to steak) be sure to visit the Grand Central Oyster Bar. It is one of New York City's best landmarks.

Grand Central Terminal

Grand Central Terminal has often been called "the heart of nyc". It officially opened 12:01am Sunday Feb. 2, 1913 and more than 150,000 visited that opening day. It has had it's ups and downs since opening but remains one of the most famous of the NYC landmarks. The many times I have visited, I had not taken photos. It is also somewhat dark inside so photos can be tricky but I had some come out pretty nicely. Shall we enter......

there are many places to dine here as well...I finally bought this bread at Zaro's after taking photos of it for quite a while...verdict? delish and only $4.95 would make a great french toast

Junior's is known for the cheesecake but the carrot cake is to die for!!

Ciao Bella gelato is a nice cooling treat, especially in the summer 

Fried Oysters at the Grand Central Oyster bar....if you like oysters, this is the place to be!!

Zaro's has birthday cake if it is your special day

Let's not forget Magnolia Bakery's Grand Central Cuppie....with edible gold dust
