American Art at Christie's New York

I popped into Christie's in November for their American Art auction preview. It didn't disappoint in the least. I just love this place and there is no entrance fee to go in and view auctions prior to sale. 

Estimate $4,000,000 to $6,000,000 

Price Realised $7,287,500 US Dollars 

This was my first time seeing Norman Rockwell paintings in person, and I must say, they are really quite lovely. I am actually looking into taking an art history type class this year in the city since I see so many of these works in person. I would like to have an even better appreciation of this art. This one sold for well above the estimate, which I am not too surprised. 

Price realised $200,000 US Dollars 

I really loved this one, it was small in size but had so much beauty. I was not shocked it went over the estimate value. 

Price Realised $996,500 US Dollars 

This one was really just so lovely. I enjoyed looking at it for some time. 

Price realised $2,292,500 US Dollars 

Price realised $250,000 US Dollars 

How cool is this painting? I just loved it, it looks like they are going to move? I love the outfits on the people, the men's hat's and the newspapers over their heads. A truly wonderful piece of artwork.

This was a really gorgeous painting and I LOVED the dress on the lady! Look at that waist! I love the neckline, the bows at the shoulders and waist. This dress could be worn today and it would look just wonderful! The painting was made in 1890-1891, that is quite a long time ago, but still oh so chic! 

I really think this is a young George Washington but I could be wrong. I couldn't find the info card that tells you who painted it and what it was. I still felt it is a marvelous painting and had to share it with you!

The Golden Age of Baseball Christie's Auction 2017

New York – Christie’s is honored to present The Golden Age of Baseball, an online sale running from August 16-23, with a concurrent public exhibition at its Rockefeller Center Galleries in New York. Comprised of a remarkable assemblage photographs, contracts, autographed letters, baseballs and bats, the sale will offer approximately 400 lots. Estimates start at $500 while the top lot of the auction is a Mike “King” Kelly professional model bat, estimated at $70,000-80,000. The contents of the auction are from the National Pastime Museum, which is an online museum based on a private collection of baseball artifacts. This sale marks the second tranche of the collection, building upon the successful first sale in 2016.

"This auction presents a fantastic opportunity for a range of baseball enthusiasts, from beginners to seasoned collectors, to acquire a work related to a favorite team or individual player." remarks Simeon Lipman, Christie’s Consultant, Pop Culture.


The auction represents the legends of baseball, spanning more than 150 years from the inception of the game through modern day, with items owned and used by icons such as Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Willie Mays, Walter Johnson, Grover Cleveland Alexander, Jimmy Foxx, Roberto Clemente, Christy Mathewson, Shoeless Joe Jackson, Martin Dihigo and Mike "King" Kelly.

I had the luck to view the first sale in 2016, and it was a baseball lovers dream! It is so neat to see these vintage items in person at Christie's showroom in Rockefeller Center.  The viewing for this year's selection of items is from August 14 to 23, 2017. It is free to the public, and if you are a baseball fan, I highly suggest a trip. 

This was from last year's sale, I just love the old time baseball cards. This one was in mint condition, and is just so darn cool! 

A photograph of one of my most favorite players, The Babe, in his Yankee pinstripes. I love the idea that you can just walk in Christie's and learn so much history about so many different subjects! I had the pleasure of viewing the Elizabeth Taylor auction which I will remember forever. It was just done so well with so many items. Patrick Demarchelier: Photographs 1975-2015 Christie's New York

I am really thrilled to bring you a sample of the some of the amazing photography from the Patrick Demarchelier exhibit at Christie's New York! This event ran from October 2-12, 2015, and I was so glad to make it right before it closed. These photographs were so amazing to see in person, so much detail in every one. The Princess Diana had to be my favorite, as it felt like you were standing right in front of her. The opening photograph below of Kate Moss and Carla Bruni is pretty fabulous, they were so young! Christie’s New York is proud to present Patrick Demarchelier: Photographs 1975-2015, a retrospective exhibition of the timeless imagery of the legendary French fashion photographer. Spanning 40 years, this comprehensive survey, with an accompanying book, seeks to present works from the entire oeuvre of the artist’s career.

As a portraitist, Demarchelier has created iconic images of some of the world’s most recognized political and entertainment figures, from Princess Lady Diana to Hillary Clinton, from Anthony Hopkins to Billy Joel to Johnny Depp. Known for working without ornate backdrops, often on or near the water, Demarchelier imbues his work with a simple spirit of joy and ease. As Anna Wintour says in her Introduction, "Patrick takes simple photographs perfectly, which is of course immensely difficult.”

In the world of fashion photography, his name is synonymous with classic beauty and elegance as well as forward looking style. The roster of international super-models sprinkled throughout this exhibition and book reads as a who’s who list of faces that have defined an era: Carla, Caroline, Christy, Cindy, Daria, Gisele, Kate, Laetitia, Linda, Nadja, Naomi.

The exhibition unites a range of works by the artist, who was intimately involved in the selection and layout of the exhibition and sequence of the handsome book.

“Patrick takes simple photographs perfectly, which is of course immensely difficult. Working without ornate settings, often in black-and-white, he makes attractive women look beautiful and beautiful women seem real,” said Anna Wintour, Vogue’s editor-in-chief, in her contribution to the exhibition’s catalogue. “In Patrick’s kingdom, Cinderella could have arrived at the palace wearing Dior — or she could have worn nothing at all.”

For his part, Demarchelier tells Vogue, with whom he has been working closely since 1974 (when he was hired by Conde Nast Editorial Director Alexander Liberman): “Everyone is the same to me. I photograph people. It doesn’t matter if they’re a star or not.”

The Opulent Eye Christie's New York April 2015

Another wonderful viewing at Christie's in Rockefeller Center when I visited in April. The items showcased here are really something to see, such grandeur all in one place! I love popping in and not knowing what they are showing to be surprised. This one did not disappoint! 

AN ORMOLU-MOUNTED SEVRES STYLE IRIDESCENT-GREEN GROUND CLOCK GARNITURE

LATE 19TH/20TH CENTURY, SPURIOUS GREEN LP, IRON-RED CHATEAU AND BLUE SCRIPT L'S MARKS, SIGNED EUG.(ENE) POITEVIN

These sold for $13,750 US Dollars which was in between their estimated value 

The detail on these items is just amazing. I think it's so cool we have these incredible items to enjoy, whether to just view or purchase, in the year 2015. 

A ROYAL WORCESTER MAJOLICA GLAZED TEA KETTLE AND COVER AND TWO WEDGWOOD TEA WARES, CIRCA 1875 

They were estimated between $5,000-$7,000 and sold for $5,000 US Dollars 

I would be afraid to use them and possibly chip one, they were just too spectacular!!

Another gorgeous tea set from 1873, the set to the left are all together and sold for $7,500 US Dollars. The tea pot to the right is from a separate set, but still very wonderful! 

I really enjoyed viewing this tea sets. They are in such amazing condition, and when you consider their age, it is really quite a feat. I can image having high tea with one of these sets! 

How amazing are these? I was really overwhelmed by the breathtaking enamel selections in this sale. 

A FRENCH GILTWOOD SETTEE

LATE 19TH/EARLY 20TH CENTURY

The pierced back with scrolling foliage centered by a putto playing a mandolin, the armrests with putti, one holding a mask, the other lighting an urn, on fluted tapering legs

The estimate was between $6,000-$8,000 US Dollars and sold for $17,500 US Dollars 

It was really superb and I could understand why it sold for over double the estimate value! 

A FRENCH ORMOLU-MOUNTED KINGWOOD, BOIS SATINÉ AND FRUITWOOD MARQUETRY PIANO À QUEUE

Estimate was between $200,000-$300,00 and it sold for $233,000 US Dollars 

An absolute wonderful item to view in person, feels like I was going back in time! 

A FRENCH ORMOLU AND CHAMPLEVE ENAMEL ENCRIER

The estimate was $1500-$2500 and it sold for $1625.00 US Dollars 

I just am in love with anything with enamel ! 

Not every item sells in an auction. If the seller has a set amount they wish to receive, and that is not realized, the item does not get sold. I couldn't find this beauty in the list of sold items, so I am assuming that is what happened. It was a lovely piece, so I was kind of surprised. 

This gorgeous clock sold for $7,500 US Dollars and it was so fabulous in person! 

I just LOVED this clock from Vienna! I was kind of shocked it sold for $50,000 US Dollars, as I thought many would want this beauty. The workmanship is just out of this world!

Look at that detail! Just so so fabulous! This estimate was $20-$30,000 but sold for $43,750 US Dollars. What an amazing piece, I was thrilled to see it in person!

Have you ever stopped in Christie's to see what they were auctioning off? It is really a museum that we get the pleasure of viewing before the items go to private ownership. Some items may be purchased by museums, but in many cases, private owners are more prominent. I find I educate myself when I visit, and then I go home and look up what I just saw in person! I love the idea of seeing things in person rather than just reading about in a book.
