Holiday
Season Marks the Final Month
To
Nominate Citizen Heroes for 2013 Honors
Medal
of Honor Recipients Search Nationwide for Unsung Civilian Heroes
WASHINGTON,
November 28, 2012 –
This year, as Americans enter the holiday season, The Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation wants to remind you
about ordinary citizens who’ve given the ultimate gift – life!
The Foundation, representing our
country’s greatest military heroes, is searching nationwide for the sixth year
in a row, for unsung citizen heroes. Civilians who have done extraordinary
deeds-saving lives in
a single heroic act, or providing on-going selfless service to their fellow
citizens through a series of acts–are eligible for Citizens Service Before Self Honors (CSBSH). Online nominations are open for one more
month only, until December 28th 2012, at www.csbsh.org.
Citizens are urged to
nominate heroes they know of as soon as possible. A nationwide campaign began in September and has
reached lawmakers, public officials and first responders to elicit nominations.
So far, more than 70 nominations from 25 different states have been made, but
the Foundation is looking for more before the deadline next month.
From the online nominations,
twenty finalists will be chosen and sent onto a second round of judging by a Medal of Honor recipient panel.
Eventually, three will be chosen to receive the prestigious Citizen Service Before Self Honors, to be presented
by Medal of Honor recipients at a
ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery on Medal of Honor Day, March 25, 2013. These
honors are unique, because they are presented to unsung heroes by our nation’s
most honored military heroes—the fewer than 85 living recipients of our nation’s
highest award for valor—the Medal of Honor.
Citizens may submit an eligible nominee
by completing the nomination form online via the Citizen Service Before Self Honors
website, www.csbsh.org. The nomination period runs through midnight on Friday, December 28, 2012.
