Disney The Lion King on Broadway Ticket Giveaway!

I was really thrilled to receive an invite to Disney's The Lion King on Broadway last month. I am a fan of the movie, and pretty much everything Disney does is pretty fantastic. It actually took from screen to stage, 3 years to develop, which I think is the reason why what you see is perfection.

I was so in awe of this show, I can't even begin to tell you. The music, the costumes and the dancing stand out as just top of the line for every scene. It is such a wonderful work of art, theatre, and puppet magic to see in person.

We had a discussion with some of the folks who make the show possible, and found some interesting tidbits about one of the most popular shows on Broadway.

Wardrobe - there is almost no regular clothing in this show, it is a combo of over 300 puppets as well as painted, dyed or printed designs for the fabrics for the actors. The director was the first female to win a tony award in 1998. The puppets and the costumes play such a key role in this show. L Steven Taylor who played Mufasa in the production spoke with us about his experiences with the show. He draws on experiences as a father to be the character of Mufasa. He has been with the show on and off for the last 10 years. Costumes and puppets are the biggest challenge for all the actors to make the characters come to life, but it always keeps their performance fresh. Scar's costume is based on a Japanese warrior.

We had the chance to see the Nala mask, which was very detailed and very light. They are made of carbon graphite, the mask weighs 3 oz. but it super strong. Pumbaa’s costume is the heaviest of the bunch, weighing in at 45 pounds! The actors playing Pumbaa and Timon were so amazing and funny. I also really loved the character of Rafiki, as the actress who played her, Tshidi Manye, was so perfect!

The story’s African setting shows in the costume both through the masks and puppets but also through the fabrics used. Bright prints were used on costumes along with grass skirts and woven corsets and armour. “…the human qualities of the lions come out in the African styled beadwork, corsets, armour and cloth, the costumes use silk cloth to negate the human shape, breaking the shoulder line, enhancing the powerful joints and thighs,” (Taymor, Disney site).
