A Trip to Uppermill in North England with Miss B !!

I am so thrilled to be bringing you another great post by Miss B from the blog bobochic! She took us to the wonderful York,England in her last post. This time we head to Uppermill in the north area of England. I hope you will be kind enough after you read her guest post here, to visit her blog as well.


I was so pleased when Rosemary invited me back to write another guest post on her wonderful blog. (If you missed my first visit you can read about my trip to York, England here)


Today I would like to take you on another tour around a quaint little English village .... Uppermill in the North of England. It lies on the River Tame, 4.5 miles east of Oldham and 11 miles from the city of Manchester.

This picturesque village is surrounded by the beautiful Saddleworth Moor

The site of the manorial corn mill originally gave the village its name. 

In the 19th century, with the arrival of the canal and turnpike roads woollen then cotton mills were built.


Alexandra Mill in the heart of the village, was built in 1860 by flannel manufacturers J Bradbury & Co. Today the old mill has been sympathetically converted into appartments. 

It's good to see so many independent shops and boutiques thriving in the village centre ....

There are several traditional village pubs ...... and what a treat for everyone  to be able to sit outside and enjoy some sunshine ... a warm weekend in May was a pleasant surprise!

Cafés, tea rooms and restaurants..... traditional and modern .......to cater for the locals and the visitors.......

I can certainly recommend the carrot cake at Kitty's Café Bar ...

The Vintage Cupcake Kitchen is a special little place .... with its shabby chic interior ....

 .... pretty mismatched china .....

and the most amazing cupcakes .... our selection...vanilla, carrot and strawberry. 

Next to the canal, Uppermill has its own art gallery and museum which includes displays of the history of Saddleworth and it houses original machines from the mill. 

The Huddersfield Canal, started in 1794, was abandoned in 1944 and only reopened for navigation in 2001 after years of restoration ....

Next to the canal is the staue of Ammon Wrigley (1861-1946) a poet, artist and historian who worked in the local mills and wrote about all aspects of life in the area.

It's easy to see why Uppermill and the surrounding area has become such a desirable place to live!
